String Instrument Maintenance

The precise calibration of a string instrument is the fundamental requirement for a pure tone and effortless playability. In our Vienna workshop, we ensure that your violin, viola, or cello is not only functionally flawless but also unfolds its full sonic potential through meticulous craftsmanship.

A string instrument is a living object made of organic wood that reacts constantly to temperature and humidity. Regular maintenance intervals are therefore essential to prevent long-term structural damage and to keep the intonation stable. We combine traditional luthier techniques with modern precision to optimize instruments for the highest professional demands.

The Path to Optimal Sound Quality: Our Process

1. Acoustic and Physical Analysis

We begin with a thorough inventory of the instrument's current state. We examine the tension of the body, the position of the bridge, the condition of the strings, and the state of the bow hair. A brief playing audit helps us identify hidden resonance issues or structural imbalances.

2. Maintenance Plan Creation

Based on the initial analysis, we create a detailed list of necessary measures. Whether it is a simple string change or a complex correction of the instrument's geometry, every step is defined here and coordinated with you before any work begins.

3. Technical Implementation

All work is performed in our climate-controlled workshop. We pay particular attention to the precise alignment of the bridge and the correct tension of the strings to ensure optimal power transfer from the bow to the instrument body.

4. Final Control and Adjustment

After the technical work is complete, a final fine-tuning takes place. We check the playability across all positions and ensure that the instrument is perfectly tuned to the specific needs and playing style of the musician.

Who is Our Maintenance Designed For?

Our services are aimed at a wide spectrum of musicians in Vienna and the surrounding areas. This specifically includes students of the University of Music and Performing Arts or other conservatories, who require constant performance from their instruments for exams and concerts. We also support professional orchestra musicians, for whom the smallest deviations in intonation can make a significant difference during a performance.

Ambitious amateurs and passionate collectors are also welcome. Often, instruments go years without professional care, leading to a gradual deterioration of sound and playability. We help reveal these "hidden" capacities of the instrument and increase the joy of playing by making the handling significantly easier and more responsive.

How the Workshop Process Works

As soon as you leave your instrument with us, it is stored in an environment with controlled humidity maintained between 45-55%. This is critical because wood can crack in air that is too dry or swell in high humidity, which would directly affect the fit of the bridge and the soundpost.

The actual work is performed using specialized measuring tools and high-precision instruments. For example, during a bridge replacement, the wood is exactly adjusted to the height of the fingerboard and the curvature of the body. A deviation of a single millimeter can change the string tension and thus the overall intonation. We work systematically and document every step to ensure reproducible quality.

Client Preparation: What to Bring

To enable efficient processing, we ask that you bring your instrument in a suitable hard case. If you have specific preferences regarding string brands or types (e.g., specific tensions or material blends), please inform us during the drop-off or bring the desired strings with you.

We also recommend preparing a short list of your observations: Are there specific areas where the instrument "buzzes"? Do certain strings feel too stiff? This information helps us adjust the setup exactly to your personal playing style. Please also bring the bow, as instrument maintenance and the inspection of bow hair often go hand in hand.

The Result: What You Receive Upon Collection

You will receive your instrument back in a technically optimized state. In addition to the physical improvement in playability, we provide a detailed work report. This document records all steps taken, such as the exact positioning of the bridge or the specific string types used.

Additionally, you will receive individual recommendations for the care of your instrument, particularly regarding the seasonal fluctuations common in Vienna. Upon request, we provide before-and-after photographs of critical areas (e.g., the bridge foot or nut slots) so that you can visually track the corrections made.

Timeframes and Appointments

The duration of the maintenance depends heavily on the scope of work. A simple string change and a brief inspection can often be completed quickly. A complete overhaul, including bridge correction and deep cleaning, typically requires more time. The average time for a setup in our workshop is approximately 3 days.

We operate on a strict appointment system to give every instrument the necessary attention. Please arrange your appointment in advance via our contact page. In urgent cases for concert musicians, we are happy to check if express processing is possible, although the technical drying times for wood and glues always take priority.

Scope of Service: What is NOT Included

Our maintenance focuses on technical optimization and substance preservation. We do not perform comprehensive restorations of severe wood fractures or cracks in the body as part of standard maintenance; such work requires a separate calculation and longer timeframes.

An important point concerns materials: We work strictly according to CITES guidelines. We do not perform work on instruments containing materials from protected species (such as ivory or Brazilian rosewood) unless valid CITES documents are provided. Similarly, the electrical upgrading of acoustic instruments (installation of pickups) is not part of this maintenance package.

Pricing and Value Added Tax

The prices for our maintenance services are transparent and based on the actual labor effort and the materials used. We bill according to a fixed price model per instrument. The prices listed in the following table include the statutory Austrian VAT of 20%.

For our B2B customers (e.g., music schools or orchestras), we invoice the amounts net, with payment due within 30 days according to our business terms. A detailed cost estimate will always be presented to you before the start of work and must be confirmed by you. Further details can be found in our Terms.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How often should I have my string instrument maintained?

We recommend a professional check-up at least once a year, ideally during the change of seasons, as humidity in Vienna fluctuates significantly and causes the wood to move.

What happens if I bring my own strings?

This is absolutely possible and often sensible if you prefer a very specific brand. In this case, only the material cost is omitted; the labor time for installation remains the same.

Is there a warranty on the work performed?

Yes, we provide a warranty of 6 months on our craftsmanship. Please note that this does not cover the durability of wear parts such as strings or bow hair.

How long must I leave my instrument with you?

A simple string change can often be completed on the same day. More extensive work, such as a complete overhaul, takes an average of 3 days. We will notify you immediately when the instrument is ready.
