Custom Instrument Build
Creating an instrument is more than mere craftsmanship; it is the materialization of a sonic ideal. In our Vienna workshop, we combine traditional lutherie techniques with the specific acoustic requirements of modern musicians to create a unique piece perfectly attuned to your playing style.
A custom-built instrument is an investment in one's own artistic development. While industrial products are designed for a statistical average, we consider the anatomy of the hand, the dynamics of the attack, and the musician's desired timbre. Every millimeter of the rib, every selection of the soundboard wood, and the precise calculation of the internal bracing serve a single purpose: the maximum unfolding of your musical expression.
Following the tradition of Vienna as a center of music, we emphasize transparent communication and high material quality. We accompany you from the first draft through the selection of woods to the final delivery. In this process, acoustic precision takes precedence over speed. Every project is a collaboration between the luthier and the artist, where technical precision meets subjective perception.
The Creation Process in Four Steps
01. Sonic Analysis and Conception
In a detailed consultation, we define the requirements. We analyze your playing technique, preferred genres, and desired sound characteristics (e.g., warm mids, brilliant highs, or maximum projection). This phase results in the technical specification for your instrument.
02. Material Selection and Seasoning
We select woods from our stock that exhibit acoustic properties suitable for your project. Grain and density are rigorously checked. In our workshop, a constant humidity level of 45-55% is maintained to prevent internal stresses in the wood.
03. Construction and Assembly
Construction occurs in precise stages: from building the mold and bending the ribs to inserting the top and back. Each phase is acoustically tested by examining the resonance of partial components before final gluing occurs.
04. Setup and Finalization
Following varnishing and hardware installation, the finest adjustments are made. Action, intonation, and playability are exactly tuned to your hand. The instrument undergoes a testing phase to ensure the structural stability of the build.
Who is a Custom Build For?
Our bespoke instruments are designed for three primary groups. First, professional musicians and soloists who require a specific timbre that cannot be achieved with standard instruments. Second, students of renowned conservatories seeking an instrument that grows with their technical development and fits ergonomically.
Third, we serve discerning collectors who value the combination of artisanal mastery and the use of rare but legal tonewoods. If you find that you are reaching the limits of your current instrument or if physical characteristics require an adjustment of the neck geometry, a custom build is the correct choice.
How the Collaboration Works
Collaboration begins with a binding appointment at our workshop in Vienna-Neubau. After the initial conception, we create a detailed cost estimate. We operate on the principle of absolute transparency: before a single shaving falls, the estimate (Smeta) is discussed and fixed in writing. Changes during the construction process are possible upon agreement, provided they do not jeopardize the structural integrity of the instrument.
During the construction phase, we keep you informed about milestones. Upon request, we send photos of the intermediate steps so you can digitally follow the creation of your instrument. The final acceptance takes place personally in the workshop, where final fine-tunings of the action are made until the feel is absolutely harmonious.
What You Should Prepare for the Commission
To make the process efficient, we ask you to consider a few points before the first meeting. Ideally, bring your current primary instrument. This allows us to analyze the existing advantages and flaws of your current equipment directly. Note specific points: Is the neck too thick? Is access to the high frets hindered? Which timbres do you particularly appreciate in other instruments?
If you already have sketches or specific wishes regarding the appearance (e.g., certain wood colors or inlays), please bring them. The more precisely the requirements are defined at the beginning, the more targeted the construction can be. We will also discuss the time planning during the meeting, as building an instrument is a slow, organic process.
The Result: What You Receive
At the end of the process, we provide you with more than just an instrument; you receive a complete documentation package. This includes a detailed report on the woods used, the origin of the materials, and the construction steps performed. You also receive care instructions specifically tailored to the finish and wood types of your instrument.
Additionally, a first readjustment after three months is included in the price. Since a new instrument must "settle in" and the wood reacts to the environment, this appointment is essential to secure optimal performance permanently. You receive an instrument that meets your personal requirements in every nuance and possesses structural durability.
Timeframes and Delivery
High-quality instrument building cannot be rushed. The drying times of the glues and the curing of the varnishes follow natural laws. On average, the production time from final concept approval to delivery is between 6 and 12 months, depending on the complexity of the design and the availability of specific woods.
We carry out a limited number of projects simultaneously to ensure the necessary attention to every detail. We therefore recommend early contact via our contact page to reserve a place in our production schedule. Exact scheduling occurs after the initial analysis phase.
Important Restrictions: What is Not Included
For ethical, legal, and professional reasons, there are clear boundaries to our activity. Under no circumstances do we work with materials that fall under the CITES agreement and lack valid documentation. This specifically includes ivory, Brazilian rosewood (Dalbergia nigra), or tortoiseshell. Without a complete proof of origin, we strictly refuse to process these materials.
Similarly, we do not perform work on the electrical mains power of amplifiers or complex on-board effect systems that require a certified electrician. Our focus is on acoustic construction and mechanical perfection. Accessories such as high-quality cases are not included in the base price of the instrument build but can be obtained optionally through our partners.
Pricing and VAT
The price calculation for a custom build consists of material costs (selection of woods), labor hours for construction and finish, and administrative planning. Since every project is unique, the listed price serves as a basis for an individual design. All prices include the statutory Austrian VAT of 20%.
For B2B customers (e.g., music schools or orchestras), the invoice is issued net, with a payment term of 30 days according to our business conditions. The detailed breakdown is provided in the estimate, which is signed before work begins. Further details on the price structure can be found in our terms or on the general services page.

Frequently Asked Questions about Custom Building
Yes, provided the woods possess the necessary CITES certificates and the technical quality (moisture, grain) is suitable for construction. We check the material in advance in our workshop.
We provide a warranty of 6 months on our craftsmanship. Please note that wood is a living material, and the warranty does not cover damage caused by improper storage (extreme humidity fluctuations).
Usually, we agree on a deposit for material reservation, followed by partial payments upon reaching defined milestones, and a final payment upon delivery.
Small adjustments in the setup are always possible. Fundamental changes to the construction (e.g., body shape) are no longer possible after the mold has been completed.
